How do I get a pre-bill from MyChart?
What is MyChart?
MyChart is a popular patient portal used by many providers – especially hospitals – that connects patients to their EMR (electronic medical records). MyChart is generally used for scheduling, price estimates, billing, reviewing test results, and more.
Can I use MyChart to get a pre-bill?
Good faith estimates can be accessed via MyChart. Good faith estimates, when comprehensive, can be submitted as a “pre-bill” to Sidecar Health. A pre-bill is an itemized list of services, procedures, and drugs along with their associated medical procedure codes (often called CPT codes) and the expected charge for each. Sidecar Health designed the pre-bill process to help you smoothly access your benefits. You can find read about the many benefits of submitting a pre-bill here.
If your provider has configured MyChart to do so, you can generate a price estimate or “good faith estimate” without having to contact them.
What does a pre-bill need to include?
Your pre-bill must include:
- Patient’s name and address (including ZIP code)
- Provider name and National Provider Identifier (NPI)
- Date(s) of service
- Procedure codes (your provider will provide CPT, HCPCS, APC, or DRG) for each service
- Reason for the services (including ICD-10 diagnosis codes)
- Amount charged for each service
Some providers have not configured their price estimator to be comprehensive enough for us to determine your benefits. You may need to speak with your provider directly to get a more comprehensive estimate.

How do I get a good faith estimate from MyChart? (step by step)
- Log in to MyChart
- On home page go to “Menu”
- Scroll down to the “Billing” section and click “Estimates”
- Click “Create a new estimate”
- NOTE: On this page you can also review finalized estimates made on prior occasions
- Select a location from your list of options
- From there, select or enter your procedure – you can enter keyword or CPT or search using icon for specific categories
- NOTE: When using icons, you will be prompted to subsequent page(s) to select specific procedures
Example when you click on icon/category:
- When prompted to input insurance information, click the “Don’t use insurance” button at the bottom of the screen
- You will be brought to the "View Estimate" page where your estimate will appear based on your inputs. You can take a screenshot to submit to Sidecar Health as a pre-bill.
- At the bottom of your "View Estimate" page, choose “Save” or “Don’t save”. Saving will keep in your MyChart history.

If you do not see your provider on this list, call your provider and ask if they use MyChart or another patient portal software.
